Mike Garlick: Nick Pope to Maintain a Mean Streak at Turf Moor

The Clarets followed up their opening-day 3-0 win over Southampton with another comprehensive victory over the Canaries and Pope hopes that becomes a blueprint for the season after Norwich had no answer to the Clarets’ high-pressure game which produced both goals in a comfortable 2-0 victory.

“Everyone would say home form is massive in the Premier League,” said the Clarets’ keeper. “We’ve had a good start. That’s two out of three now and we’ll look to build on that and really make this place a place people don’t want to come.

“Norwich were on a high after their result last week, so it was a great result for us and a performance we put in that was at a great level. Like a few teams in this league, they like to play from the back. We are a team that likes to press high at times and get on the front foot. That’s what we like to do and cause them problems even when we haven’t got the ball. It’s something we looked to do and had worked on during the week, to try and win the ball high up the pitch and make that first pass forward and we created opportunities from that.”

Chris Wood was the beneficiary as he grabbed his first goals of the season with a quick-fire double to over-power a Norwich side which had beaten champions Manchester City a week earlier. And while Sean Dyche’s side – up to ninth in the Premier League table – could have won more emphatically, Pope still had an important part to play with a vital save from in-form striker Teemu Pukki when the scores were level.

“We’re delighted for Woody because he works so hard for the team,” added the England international. “As striker goals are what you look for and as a goalie, you look for clean sheets, so we were both happy. Early on in the game where we had started really well, it would have been a bit of a blow to us (to concede), so I was delighted to chip in and make a save and keep it at 0-0 and we scored within the next five or 10 minutes so it was a good start to the game.”
