Ashley Barnes is in line to make his first Burnley appearance since New Year’s Day after complications following a hernia operation before lockdown. 

The burly frontman will play twice for the Under 23s against Sunderland at the County Ground in Leyland, and again against Newcastle at the LFA headquarters on Friday. His presence will add some experience to what’s likely to be a youthful side to face the Wearsiders, who may have three former Burnley Academy players in their ranks. 

We're getting injuries back, Ashley Barnes is back with us, training with the first team as normal, so that's pleasing,” said Burnley boss Sean Dyche.

"He's feeling good so far. It's early yet, he's fit as regards the science side of things, it's now about the football side of things, but he's showing good signs."

The game will take place 21st of September at 2 pm behind closed doors.
