The 2020/21 campaign is set to get underway on September 12, with plenty of business set to be done before then. The Clarets are looking to strengthen in that area this summer and speculation in the national media suggested they have moved for the 21-year-old Lewis O’Brien. 

According to the Sun, Burnley is ready to pay £7 million in an attempt to beat Sheffield United to the signature of Huddersfield Town’s Player of the Year. And are convinced that O’Brien epitomises everything required to be a success at Turf Moor with a £7 million offer on the cards. 

O'Brien was a standout performer for the Terriers last season when he won the club's player of the year honour.

“I didn’t really expect anything to come of this season so for the fans and everyone to vote for me to be Player of the Year is a massive shock but a massive compliment to me,” O’Brien told Huddersfield’s website recently.

“It was a very surprising season for me. I came in thinking I’d be in and around the team, not actually playing week in week out like I did.

“To top it off with everyone voting me as Player of the Year is a big surprise.”

A first Turf Moor defeat since New Year’s Day looked likely when Raul Jimenez scored with a superb 76th-minute volley to take Wolves closer to a European return. But Burnley dug deep to keep alive their slim hopes of making it to Europe themselves.

Six-and-a-half months after their last home defeat it looked as though the Clarets had finally run out of steam once Jimenez had scored his 27th goal of the season. But despite their struggle to make chances, the Clarets still found the resolved to get some reward and gain amends for the last-ditch penalty they conceded in a 1-1 draw at Molineux in August.

But Chris Wood was delighted to ‘make amends’ and went from zero to hero for the Clarets as he converted a penalty in the final seconds moments after missing a sitter from three yards.

Wood fired his spot kick into the top corner in the 96th minute after Matt Doherty was judged to have handled in the area. It earned Burnley a point that seemed unlikely after Raul Jimenez's fantastic volley gave the visitors the lead 16 minutes from time.

“We were just waiting for that one chance. Luckily at the end that came back to me, especially just after I had put that header wide,” said Wood, whose goal was his first since scoring against Tottenham in the last game before lockdown and took him to 12 for the season.

“I thought I’d waited all that time for one chance and I put it wide, so it was nice to make amends for that. I’d done an average finish, so it was nice to put it right.

“It’s about clearing your mind. It’s my job to do these types of things.

“That’s why I’m a striker and that’s what I’m here to - hopefully put the ball in the back of the net and thankfully I could do that.”

“We fight until the end and never give up. That’s the main thing about us and that’s what we’re so good at,” added Wood.

And it just about keeps alive hopes of a Europa League finish with the Clarets on 51 points with two games remaining. It means Burnley sit ninth in the Premier League, whiles Wolves remain sixth and three points off the top four.

Goalkeeper Nick Pope is ready to keep seizing the moment as the Clarets target a memorable end to the season. Nick Pope also believes that Burnley can improve more their impressive clean sheet record further as they push for Europe in the final four games of the Premier League season.

The 28-year-old's closest rival for the accolade, Liverpool's Alisson, who he'll meet at Anfield on Saturday, is now one behind after Leandro Trossard found the net for Brighton at the Amex Stadium.

Pope was given plenty to do on his way to earning his latest blank. He kept out efforts from Tomas Soucek, Michail Antonio and Andriy Yarmolenko in the first half and then made an exceptional stop to deny substitiute Sebastien Haller in the second.

Clarets have also put 10 points on the board since resuming after lockdown and with just one defeat in 12 league games stretching back to January are one of the form teams of the division.

With four games to go, Burnley are five points shy of their highest tally as a Premier League club.
Despite injuries, departures and speculations, the Turf Moor men continue to defy the odds to ensure an interesting end to the season ison the cards.

After more than a week of non-contact training built around fitness work in small ‘pods’ of players on separate pitches, clubs have now been given the all-clear to adopt stage two of the league’s ‘Return To Training Protocol’.

The implementation of the policy, following talks with government officials, players, management and representative bodies, means squads will now be able to train as a group and engage in tackling.
And with the Premier League moving towards setting a date for a resumption of the fixture list, Taylor sees the latest development as a key phase towards playing again.

The Clarets returned to their Barnfield training ground on 19 May following a first round of testing for the Covid-19 virus and have since had two further sets of test results in line with the rest of the Premier League.

The players were restricted to working in the same groups during phase one of the protocol with Taylor in a ‘pod’ alongside Ashley Westwood, Jeff Hendrick, Robbie Brady and skipper Ben Mee.
And Taylor believes the regime they have been following will have them ready to hit the ground running when a resumption of the league programme is given the go-ahead.

Details on how the rest of the season – which will involve a total of 92 matches – will be structured are expected to be announced soon, with a start and finish date and how many mid-week games will be played. For the first time, English football will take place through the summer months but Taylor is not complaining as the Clarets try and chase a top-10 finish in the Premier League for only the second time.

“Things are different but everyone has really knuckled down where we are and everyone has got their mind on it, focused on what we need to do and just making the best situation of what’s currently happening in the world.

“We are desperate to play and hopefully it will be a huge boost to everyone.

“We’ve got nine games left and we’re just desperate to crack on and get the season finished and see how far we can get and how high up the league we can go.

“Before the lockdown we were on a great run and there’s no reason why we can’t carry that on.”

The figure was down on the record profit of £36.6m (£45m pre-tax) recorded for the previous 12 months, due largely to a higher net spend on new players of approximately £20m compared to the previous year where the sales of Andre Gray and Michael Keane boosted profitability considerably.

Chairman Mike Garlick said: “In the second half of the season we also invested heavily in our recruitment and scouting set-up, more than tripling the number of full-time staff. We are confident that this increased investment will slowly but surely develop our ability to identify and sign players that can improve our first-team squad, whilst at the same time helping to maintain our financial sustainability as a club for generations to come.”

Mike Garlick: “Following our spectacular seventh-place finish in the 2017/18 season, we embarked on our first season in Europe in over 50 years - something, which I’m sure most of us, a few years ago, though we would never see again. Combining our European adventure with the weekly fixture programme of the Premier League proved highly challenging.

“But following a highly successful second half of the season, we managed to slowly but steadily climb up the table to a respectable finish and secure our fourth consecutive season of top-flight football for the first time in 50 years.

“I would like to thank all our staff for their continued hard work and commitment and all our fans for their unwavering support and passion. You all help to make a difference. The future is extremely bright for all of us, although in the short term we know we all face unique challenges brought about by the coronavirus pandemic."

"Issuing the club accounts is a legal requirement but our immediate thoughts are with those dealing with the effects of the current on-going situation. We are working closely with the Premier League and the relevant authorities regarding footballing matters, while off the field making sure the club continues to operate effectively and all staff, family, and fans stay as safe and healthy and well supported as possible.
