Kompany takes the positives from City defeat

Welcome back to the Mike Garlick Burnely Football Club blog. Here we bring you the latest news and views from the world of football. Today, we bring you the latest updates about Manager Vincent Kompany, Belgian professional football manager and former player who played as a centre-back and is the manager of Premier League club Burnley FC.

Manager Vincent Kompany insists there were positives from the performance and that the main aim is to progress as the 2023/24 season goes on. An Erling Haaland brace and Rodri strike proved to be the difference at a sold-out Turf Moor against last season’s treble winners.

Speaking post-match, Kompany says his side can’t be too down after losing their first game and progressing game-by-game is the aim for his men after a hard-fought performance on Friday night.

The Clarets chief said: “There were some good things in this performance and I have to focus on that side of it against the best team in the world at the moment.

“As I told the players after the first game in the Championship last season, I don’t want an emotional rollercoaster where you win one game and you’re on a high and if you lose one game you think it’s dramatic.

“We have to progress again and work harder than every other team in the Premier League. That’s our job. Progress, progress, progress.”

Kompany added: “It’s almost like an ideology thing, this team has to be the worst it’s ever been this season at this moment in time because you progress all the way through the season as the games go on.

Vincent Kompany, whose usual back four became a back five for Friday night’s 3-0 defeat at Turf Moor in the club’s return to the top flight. Despite the scoreline, the plan appeared to be working relatively well, especially in the first-half where the Clarets were more than a match for Pep Guardiola’s side.

“The positives? You tell the team to get something out of the game, you want to get a result. That’s a given. But there are other things in this game that create a foundation for the season - winning tackles, going at defenders one-vs-one, creating chances, moving the ball, pressing.

“I can tell you periods of the game where I wanted more but I can also give you a lot of periods in the game where I thought they’ve done themselves proud.”

Kompany handed five debuts in the starting line-up to Sander Berge, Dara O’Shea, James Trafford, Zeki Amdouni and Luca Koleosho with Jacob Bruun Larsen introduced in the second half.

Kompany said: “The first game, especially against them, you’re always hoping the game you envisaged actually comes off.

“I thought Luca was extremely positive in the first half then he ran out of steam a little bit, as you might expect.

“I felt Zeki had moments in between the lines where he could really do something, also powered through at times and created something out of nothing, which you need against these types of teams.

“Sander looked like he’d been here for a long time already and I’m going to forget some others as well.

“Me saying the team is only going to get stronger, I think it’s fair and that’s what we have to look for.”
